Serving Downtown Presbyterian

Newsletter
IF someone is gifted in this area and would enjoy putting together a newsletter, we envision a one-page sheet that folks can pick up after worship, view on the church website, or on bulletin boards in the building.  This would involve collecting announcements, prayer requests, and needs, and organizing them into a format for effective communication within our congregation.

Ushers
If you would be interested in helping people find seating at worship, or perhaps parking, please let us know.  There are some guys already serving in this way.  This can be a great way to help the greeters make people feel welcome, and to lessen the burden of getting ones family to worship Sunday mornings!

Care Team
Laura Hamby will be heading up a group of people interested in coordinating care of our families that have new babies, illlness in the family, elderly assistance, moving, etc.  There is a lot of overlap with the care given by community groups, so a lot of this is just double checking to make sure that needs are being met and that the church at large is able to assist community groups in caring for our folks.

Wash Cleaner’s Rags
We accumulate a lot of rags that the cleaners use to keep the building clean.  They are in a small trash can in the janitor’s closet.  This job would involve picking those up every 2-3 weeks, running them through the wash at home, and returning to the janitors closet the next week.  An easy, very concrete, way to meet a need.

Bulletin Board
Soon we will have a large bulletin board between the lobby and sanctuary.  If you would like to be in charge of tidying this up and organizing the appearance of this board, this will help eliminate one mess in the building, as well as help make for effective communication among us.  No one wants dated announcements or the layered clutter that this board will become without YOU!

Rides to Worship
There are some folks who could use a ride to church Sundays.  Obviously, we would not ask you to drive from Woodruff to Liberty “on your way”, but it would be nice to have a few people who live in different areas who would be able to do this.  We would ask that you think carefully about whether you would be able to manage getting your own families to worship in addition to a (sometimes last minute) call about picking someone up.

Special Needs Mentor/Friend
Are you giffted with a heart for the mentally or physically disabled?  Would you like to meet for conversation or a meal with an adult, child, or teen who could use a friend?  Please contact one of the deacons if you would like to be available to serve in this way.

Building
Maybe you served on the building committee and have had a chance to recover, or maybe you would just like to help with the physical building and grounds.  We often have a need for things to be put together, taken to the building, set up, or for handyman (gender nonspecific) skills.   Let us know.

Art
If you would like to help Kyle Buttram with acquisition and display of art in the building, we could use a few  extra sets of eyes, and hands.  Not necessary to MAKE the art, just help find it and get it in place.  :  )

Landscaping/Beautification
David and Mindy Van DeWater have taken on the planters and landscaping around the church.  A few people who would enjoy working on this with them would be appreciated.  It’s more than just watering the planters (which needs to be done), but probably a limited time committment with occasional work times at the building and grounds.

Wedding Coordinator(s)
We do not get tons of requests for weddings at the building, but we do get some.  More often, we get requests for rehersals or wedding functions at the building.  We need a point person for coordinating with the cleaners for cleaning and set up/take down, as well as someone to develop a plan for how to best use the building both for the enjoyment of the party using it and to ensure good stewardship of the building on our part.

Financial Counselor
Someone to do pro bono counseling for folks trying to get on their feet financially.  This would typically involve meeting with people who have been receipients of DPC benevolence support.  This would likely involve help with basic financial skils, budgeting, setting up an emergency fund, savings, how to allocate paychecks, not skilled investment work or anything of that nature.  Also, it would NOT be a situation where the church offered your help as a perk for church members (especially who might be able to afford those services).  It would be more to provide education and accountablility for those receiving church financial aid.

If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, please contact one of the deacons:
